Honoring Diwali with Respectful Appreciation

As a yoga community how do we honor Diwali?

This year Diwali happens from October 31st to November 1st. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a celebration of light overcoming darkness, joy, and new beginnings. As yoga practitioners, this holiday offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with Indian traditions respectfully. However, it’s important to differentiate between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation in how we honor Diwali.

We can start by understanding the differences between the two. Cultural appreciation means taking time to learn, understand, and respectfully engage with the origins and significance of another culture. Cultural appropriation, however, involves using symbols, practices, or traditions without context or respect, which can feel shallow or disrespectful to those within the culture.

Here are three simple ways to celebrate Diwali with appreciation, not appropriation:

  1. Learn About Diwali’s Roots
Take time to understand Diwali’s history, meaning, and cultural significance. Reading or listening to those who celebrate it traditionally enriches your experience and builds authentic connection.

  2. Incorporate Diwali’s Themes Mindfully
Embrace the universal theme of light overcoming darkness in your yoga or meditation practice. Guided meditations or journaling on light, gratitude, and renewal honor Diwali’s spirit without imitating rituals.

  3. Support South Asian Creators and Yoga Teachers
Seek out classes, content, or products from South Asian teachers and businesses. This is a respectful way to connect with the culture and uplift voices from the Indian community that has given us yoga.

Approaching Diwali with awareness and respect enhances our understanding of yoga’s cultural roots and lets us celebrate in a way that brings true light to the community. May this Diwali bring brightness and gratitude to your practice.
